Following the final show Unit X show last Thursday the blog will be bringing you a series of posts about the event. To begin with we have the reaction from Project Unit X blogger Houda Basma.
To wrap up this years phenomenal Unit X, students from all years and course at Manchester School of Art came together to put on an exceptional show in the heart of Manchester.
With only a few days to set up the show, everyone put in their 100% to renovate Federation House into a great exhibition space. Given minimal resources like cardboard, string and tape it is almost a miracle to see how the space had transformed between Tuesday and Thursday evening. The space was used to its best taking advantage of every feature throughout the building, from poles to pipes. Having said this it was amazing to walk through the exhibition once it had been completely installed, as I was truly astounded to see how great the work looked in the space! You almost couldn’t tell that the plinths, screens and walls were all cardboard.
‘Everyone worked with commitment and enthusiasm (and some trepidation!) to put together this fantastic show that celebrated all of the hard work and endeavour over the last few weeks throughout the Project, Unit X.’ Kirsteen Aubrey (3DD Tutor)
The turn out on the opening night was superb, with hundreds of people including VIPs, fellow undergraduates, families and friends to enjoy the work and speak to the students about their practice. The evening included a marching brass band, films, Singing performances through interactive installations as well as an intervention on the Metro tram. Everyone genuinely had an enjoyable evening!
‘A great evening, fantastic work and a wonderful way to celebrate the end of your year!’ Kirsteen Aubrey
‘Really strong show, good job by all involved!’ Lance Walker, MMU
‘The work is amazing!’ Alison Buckley, Creative Matchmaker
